USPS trucks are a reassuring presence throughout the country.

Laura and Marco, are two storms that threaten states in the US Gulf of Mexico basin in the coming days; while the battle to save the United States Postal Services rages in Washington.

Understanding that the Postal Service is a vital resource to Americans everywhere, and gauging the threat to November’s election, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi took action. She summoned congress back to DC in an attempt to rescue the embattled agency and tentatively agree on a rescue bill. The White House threatened to veto the one they’ve hammered out.

This dramatic move from Congress came as postmaster general Louis DeJoy testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Friday, August 21. He assured members of the committee that mail-in voting is the agency’s “No. 1 priority.”

Postal carriers are an integral part of the American way of life.

The question is, what kind of priority is he referring to? To deliver mail-in ballots on time or hold them back to ascertain a Trump victory? To de facto disenfranchise voters or provide a way for the current president to question results adverse to him?

In the meantime, delays in mail-in prescriptions grow. Medical supplies that range from antibiotics to insulin are either arriving late or lost in the process, putting those dependent on these medications at considerable risk. The impact has been felt from retirees to veterans to some pharmacy chains. Let’s remember that one in every five Americans depends on the mail for their prescriptions.

Millions of Americans depend on the Postal Service for their prescriptions.

Impervious to this crisis, the US Senate remains on vacation, and Mitch McConnell has not raised a finger to contact his colleagues and bring them back to resolve the problem. One wonders if they are aware of their responsibilities as elected officials.

On Monday, August 24, DeJoy is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.
